PRIMARY 6: HUMAN RIGHTS

Malala Yousafzai was just 11 years old when she decided to speak up for the rights of girls to go to school.

She lived in Mingora, Pakistan. Do you know where Mingora is in Pakistan? Look at the map and find Mingora on the map.

Malala was on her way home from school with her friends when the Taliban tried to kill her. Why?

Because in Pakistan the Taliban believe that girls should not go to school and Malala spoke publicly about girls' rights to education in Swat Valley, Pakistan.

On October 9, 2012 she was shot in the head. The bullet did not kill her but she was seriously injured. Two of her classmates were also hurt. Malala was 15 years old.

She is a young girl who has fought for and continues to fight for the rights of girls to an education and the right for freedom of speech. She has done so without the use of violence or weapons. She has used the power of words bravely against the extremists in her country.

She now lives with her family in Birmingham in the UK where she continues to give hope to many people around the world who are fighting for their rights and against injustices.

You could read her book "I am Malala" to learn more about her life.

Watch the trailer of her book.
